Relationships - Doing life together

There are many and varied types of relationships, each with its unique aspects.

Being in a relationship today has very different connotations in our time than it did not many years ago. And, for us to question some of those relationships is seen as vilification – even when we judge them against the Truth of God’s Word. Yet, God’s Word has much to say about the blessings of godly relationships and the consequences of ungodly ones.

As Christians, we would believe that the paramount relationship is the one we have with Jesus Christ, our Lord & Saviour. Some would then say that if we can get this relationship right (or at least well on the way) all other relationships will be okay.

If I love God, then all is good with the world regarding my many and varied relationships. However, there are sticking points here. Take, for example 1 John 4:20 which says, If anyone says, "I love God," yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen.

In this verse alone, we have a dilemma for some believers who genuinely believe they love God but who have real relationship problems with ‘a brother whom he has seen’. Then there is Chapter 5 of Ephesians – the ‘husband and wife’ passage – which talks about submission and love.
These are only two ‘human to human’ examples we could mention and which we will look at in the coming weeks. Suffice it to say, we may WANT to have strong, loving relationships but living them out in a consistent, pure way, is easier said than done for most of us.

Spiritually speaking, we have the opposing forces of God – who is LOVE – and Satan, who seeks only to kill, steal and destroy everything God calls good. For example, destruction of relationship with God and with others is a prime focus of that evil plan as we observe, or even experience, on a daily basis.

Over the next two months, we will seek to discover what God says about relationship with each other and with Him through Jesus Christ. As we journey together, our prayer is that each of us will grow in both our knowledge and application of healthy relationships.
