Israel:
The simple utterance of that name brings to light a variety of thoughts and emotions. The spectrum, if you could call it that, contains on one end those who hate and vehemently oppose the very existence of this tiny nation whilst, on the other end, stand those who fully support its right to not only exist but who see and understand the vital importance of the nation of Israel both to the world in this day and the future.
Volumes have been written about Israel from both ends of this spectrum and to even begin to understand why, we must go first to the source of the beginnings of what we know today as Israel. That source is the Bible. It is from here we read of God ‘creating’ what was to become the nation of Israel through his conversation with, and promises to, a man named Abram (later to be called Abraham)
It is vital that we, as God’s New Covenant people, seek a better understanding of the history, current situation and future of Israel because it gives us the true picture of what God is doing in His world. Aviel Shneider, Editor of Israel Today states, For Israel to be understood around the world is more difficult than I thought … It is a miracle of God that there are those who want to learn more about Israel … Most people don’t seem to care who in the Holy Land is right, as long as the region is quiet. In reality, the region is NOT quiet and, importantly, God has not turned a blind eye.
Research seems to show an appallingly low percentage of Christians (let alone the rest of the world) who have any great interest in Israel, and yet this nation is central to what is happening and will happen in God’s timetable.
Our hope is that, over the next month, we will encourage believers to engage their hearts and minds in order to take a more careful and prayerful interest in Israel, particularly as it relates to where we stand in this moment of time in the segment of “the Last Days”. This will be but a beginning – a beginning we trust will cause us to “pray for the peace of Jerusalem” with greater urgency because of better understanding.
